Neptune commands the baroque stage in this richly hand-colored view of Rome's Fontana di Trevi, the triumphal facade glowing in warm ochre and jade tones that only early-twentieth-century chromolithography could conjure — a souvenir of the Grand Tour at its postcard-golden-age peak, when travelers sent home these luminous little windows onto the Eternal City. The fountain, completed by Nicola Salvi in 1762 against the rear wall of the Palazzo Poli, is captured here before the modernizing crowds arrived, its Neptune flanked by Tritons and wild sea-horses frozen mid-surge above the basin. The reverse is unused and blank, save for the standard divided-back format with a stamp box in the upper right — no message, no postmark, a card bought but perhaps never sent, waiting more than a century to reach its destination.
