Postcard Rome Castle St Angelo Tiber River Fishing 1910 Used Pennsylvania

Rome, Italy1910Pre-linenGood

A lone fisherman drifts on the Tiber in a wooden skiff, rod trailing in the olive-grey current, while the massive drum of Castel Sant'Angelo looms on the far bank and the distant dome of St. Peter's floats against a pale Roman sky — a scene of unhurried eternal Rome captured in hand-tinted color around 1910, when Orlo received this card postmarked from Sod[us?), Pennsylvania, sent by a friend named Ada. The castle itself, built as Emperor Hadrian's mausoleum in AD 139, was converted to a papal fortress in the sixth century by Pope Gregory the Great, as the card's own printed caption explains in careful schoolbook English — a geographic lesson tucked into a postcard. Ada's cursive flows down the left side of the correspondence space, addressed to Orlo E. H— of Complanter, Warren County, Pennsylvania, a small oil-country community on the Allegheny River whose residents clearly had big European dreams.
