Antique & Vintage Postcards

A tram glides past the Grand Café Faraglia as horse-drawn carriages cross the sunlit expanse of Piazza Venezia, all eyes drawn to the gleaming white marble colossus of the Vittoriano — the Altar of the Fatherland — rising at the far end in a blaze of neoclassical ambition that Romans have loved to mock and tourists have always adored; this wide-format panoramic cartolina captures the square just years after the monument's partial inauguration in 1911, when the piazza itself was still being transformed by the demolitions Mussolini would later complete. Published by E. & G. Di Veroli of Rome and printed by Cesare Capello of Milan, this is a quality Italian "Cartolina Artistica" — the elongated panoramic format a rarity among early-twentieth-century Italian souvenir cards. The reverse is unused, its ornate dotted border frame and publisher's oval stamp intact.
