A handsome sepia-toned real-photo postcard captures Birmingham's grand Council House as seen from Victoria Square, its ornate Baroque dome presiding over a busy street scene still populated by pre-war-style saloon cars — a city rebuilding its confidence in the early 1950s. Written on 14 October 1950, this card crossed the Channel from Birmingham to the American Zone of occupied Germany, addressed to the Zimmermann family in Rüsselsheim am Main. The sender — signing off with warm greetings to parents and grandfather — describes a pleasant Saturday afternoon stroll and mentions the lovely weather, a small domestic detail that makes the card feel touchingly immediate against the backdrop of postwar Europe.
