Postcard c1904 Vanished London Kingsgate St Holborn Arthur Payne Hildesheimer

London, England, UK1904Pre-linenFair-Good

Gas lamps flicker above cobblestones where a London Parcels Delivery Co. horse-drawn van trundles past a grocer's shop — Arthur Payne's vivid watercolour reconstruction of Kingsgate Street, Holborn, immortalises a corner of Victorian London that Dickens knew well and that had already been swept away by the time this postcard was printed around 1904. Part of S. Hildesheimer & Co.'s celebrated "Vanished London" series, these cards were among the most artistically ambitious of the Edwardian era, bringing lost streetscapes back to life for a public fascinated by urban change. A gentleman in a top hat lounges at left; a water pump anchors the foreground — details that feel lifted straight from the pages of Bleak House.
