Postcard 1905 Andrew Borde's Bedroom Mint House Pevensey Sussex Interior

Pevensey, East Sussex, England1907Pre-linenGood

Exposed oak beams sag with centuries of history above a curtained window and a simple iron bedstead in this atmospheric interior view of "Andrew Borde's Bedroom" at the Mint House, Pevensey — a room allegedly used by the Tudor physician, traveller, and wit Andrew Boorde (c.1490–1549), whose eccentric life spanned the courts of Henry VIII and the inns of half of Europe. The Mint House itself dates to 1342 and was one of the most historically evocative vernacular buildings in Sussex, its walls decorated with rare stencilled or painted textile-patterned surfaces visible in this photograph. The room's minstrel gallery ladder, candlestick, and Jacobean-style chest evoke the building's role as a living museum of English domestic history. This photographic card — unused, with an "Affix 1d Stamp Inland / 1d Stamp Foreign" box — dates to the Edwardian era when the Mint House was operated as a tourist attraction and antique-filled guesthouse.
