Antique & Vintage Postcards

A tanbark-sailed river barge glides across the River Severn at dusk, its warm ochre canvas silhouetted against a sky blazing with amber and rose — and rising beyond the medieval stone quay, Worcester Cathedral's great Perpendicular tower commands the skyline with the serene authority of nine centuries of English ecclesiastical architecture, rendered in Arthur C. Payne's bravura watercolour style for S. Hildesheimer & Co.'s premium art-postcard series. Payne was a prolific Edwardian topographical watercolourist whose cathedral and river-town views for Hildesheimer achieved wide circulation; this example, Series No. 5293, was posted from London on 25 November 1905 — just weeks after the postcard's golden age peak — with a King Edward VII ½d green stamp affixed, and the message written in a flowing hand from a sender who appears to sign with the initial "M" to a recipient named simply by her title and surname initial at Belford Lodge, Caversham, Reading. The warm patina of actual use gives this card an intimacy that unused examples lack.
