Snow still clings to the high limestone peaks of the Ammergau Alps in this sweeping panoramic view of Oberammergau, the village spread peacefully across the valley floor, its church spire just visible among the clustered rooftops — while an inset vignette in the lower left spotlights the Funk'sche Weiß- und Schnittwarenhandlung, a local dry-goods and fabric shop whose proprietor was savvy enough to sponsor a "Gruß aus" (Greetings from) advertising card distributed to customers and tourists alike. Published by the Munich firm of Lorenz Prantl (card no. 1076), this is a charming example of the early commercial postcard as local advertising vehicle, a genre beloved by social historians and topographical collectors.
