Antique & Vintage Postcards

Early automobiles and horse-drawn vehicles share the broad expanse of the Marienplatz in this splendid hand-colored view of Munich's Neues Rathaus — the neo-Gothic town hall whose ornate façade, bristling with pinnacles and statuary, was completed in 1908 and immediately became the defining image of the Bavarian capital. Behind the Rathaus, the twin copper-green onion domes of the Frauenkirche, Munich's beloved cathedral, glow warmly against a pale sky, while the Mariensäule column stands at the left edge of the composition. The presence of early motor cars alongside horse traffic precisely dates this card to the transitional years of roughly 1910–1918, when Munich was one of Germany's most cosmopolitan and rapidly modernizing cities. Card no. 328 on the reverse with a red dividing line, unused and clean.
