Antique & Vintage Postcards

Serene and timeless, this panoramic black-and-white view sweeps across the broad Alpine meadows before the famous village of Oberammergau, Bavaria, with the unmistakable rocky summit of the Kofel — crowned by its iron cross — rising sharply against a pale sky, and the gentler Notspitze ridge stretching behind it; in the valley below, the steeple of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul punctuates the white-washed rooftops of a town world-famous for its Passion Play, performed every decade since 1634 in fulfillment of a plague vow. The reverse carries only a faint penciled inscription, possibly a personal note or dedication, and was never mailed — a crisp souvenir likely purchased by a visitor during one of the Passion Play years.
