Antique & Vintage Postcards

From high on the rocky promontory of the Altes Schloss, the whole sweep of Baden-Baden unfolds below — terracotta rooftops threading along a valley road, dark forested hills rolling toward a hazy Rhine plain stretching to the horizon, while in the foreground the warm sandstone ruins of the medieval castle cling to sheer granite cliffs amid pine and autumn-tinted scrub. This early colour postcard was produced using the pioneering Lumière Autochrome-adjacent "Farbenphotographie" process by Gebrüder Metz of Tübingen, one of Germany's most respected early colour publishers, lending the scene a painterly warmth that plain monochrome cards of the era could never achieve. Baden-Baden was already a celebrated European spa destination by this period, drawing royalty and wealthy tourists who would have sent cards like this home as elegant souvenirs of their Schwarzwald sojourn. The card is unused, with only a collector's pencilled inventory notation ("1– 472") and the publisher's catalogue number M5 / 57413 on the reverse — clean, unwritten, and preserved remarkably well given its age of well over a century.
