RPPC Postcard 1915 WWI La Pommeraye France Ruined Chateau German Poem Used

La Pommeraye (near Cuts), Oise, France1915RPPCFair

In the flickering twilight of a shattered French village, a crucifix stands utterly unharmed before the bullet-riddled, shell-gutted walls of a château at La Pommeraye, near Cuts in the Oise — a ghostly image photographed on June 5, 1915, by a German soldier who wrote on the reverse that he had been at this very place on that date, keeping it as a "Erinnerung an 1914/15" (memory of 1914/15). The front of the card pairs this haunting real-photo image with a German-language patriotic poem — "Ein zerschossenes Schloß in La Pommeraye" — describing the thunder of battle, the 9th Reserve Corps pushing forward heroically toward Carlepont, and the strange, solemn sight of the crucifix standing serene amid the war's wreckage, its survival held up as an almost mystical symbol. La Pommeraye-sur-Oise sat in the contested zone between Noyon and Compiègne on the Western Front; the 9th Reserve Corps fought fierce actions in this sector in 1914–15. This RPPC-format propaganda/memento card — printed with the poem on the image side and handwritten field notes on the reverse — is a vivid and deeply personal artefact of a German soldier's experience on the Western Front in Year One of the Great War.
