Antique & Vintage Postcards

Against a luminous Alpine sky, the snow-mantled summit of the Jungfrau dominates this hand-coloured Photochrom-style view from Interlaken — one of the most iconic vistas in all of Switzerland, beloved by Victorian and Edwardian travellers who flooded into the Bernese Oberland by train to gaze up at the 4,158-metre giant. A cream-and-ochre grand hotel peeks through dense pine forest at the right, while what appears to be a yellow tram or carriage nestles at the valley's edge to the left, hinting at the busy tourist infrastructure already well established by the turn of the century. The vivid colour lithography — almost certainly produced in the Photoglob / Wehrli tradition — gives the glaciers an almost painted luminosity that made these cards irresistible souvenirs for travellers like many an early tourist named Hans or Elisabeth passing through.
