Three Dutch windmills stand sentinel along the 's-Gravendeelsche dijk in Dordrecht, their broad sails caught mid-turn in this crisp black-and-white photographic halftone — a quintessential image of the Netherlands at the very turn of the twentieth century, when windmills were still working machines rather than tourist icons. Dordrecht, one of Holland's oldest cities, sits at the confluence of several great rivers in South Holland, and this dike road leading toward 's-Gravendeel would have been a familiar working landscape for locals named Pieter or Maaike. The card was printed by the celebrated Leipzig firm Dr. Trenkler Co., whose high-quality photographic halftone reproduction was sought after by publishers across Europe. The Dutch "Briefkaart" back with its bold red "AAN" address line and undivided format firmly places this in the pre-1907 era.
