Antique & Vintage Postcards

A graceful sailboat drifts on the glassy surface of Lake Zürich, its white hull mirrored in water tinted a dreamy aquamarine, while across the shore the turreted red-brick fantasy of the Rotes Schloss and the grand domed Tonhalle concert hall rise from a curtain of summer trees — two landmark buildings that defined Zürich's fashionable lakefront at the dawn of the twentieth century. The Tonhalle, inaugurated in 1895, was already one of Switzerland's premier concert venues by the time this card was produced, hosting celebrated conductors and delighting audiences including visitors named Clara or Rudolf who might have bought this very card as a souvenir. The vivid colour lithography — Edition Photoglob Co., Zürich, card no. 3264 — represents the finest Swiss colour printing of the era, and the composition is a textbook Photoglob masterpiece of tonal balance and pastel sky.
