Postcard 1900 Lucerne Switzerland Hofkirche Cathedral Wehrli UDB Real Photo

Lucerne, Switzerland1900Pre-linenGood

From a perspective perfectly centred on the grand staircase, the twin Romanesque-Gothic spires of Lucerne's Hofkirche (Church of St. Leodegar) soar above the quiet street in this early photographic halftone — one of the most majestic church façades in all of Switzerland, its baroque portal framed by topiary and flanked by the city's rooftops in a composition that rewards the eye of any collector. A "Cook's Tours" sign is visible on the building to the right, a delightful period detail confirming that Thomas Cook's travel empire had already firmly planted its flag in Lucerne by the turn of the century, shepherding travellers named Edith or George through this very square. The Hofkirche, largely rebuilt after a fire in 1633, retains its Romanesque towers from the original medieval structure. Published by Verlag Gebr. Wehrli, Kilchberg, Zürich — card no. 1519 — this is a companion piece to the Gütsch card (no. 1520), evidently from the same Wehrli Lucerne series.
