Antique & Vintage Postcards

On a bustling Geneva square circa 1900, a woman in full black mourning dress pushes a perambulator past the grand Corinthian colonnade of the Grand Théâtre, while a workman hauls a cart across the cobbles — the Musée Rath's neoclassical portico visible just behind, and a lone allegorical column rising against a white sky that lends the scene an almost theatrical gravity of its own. Photographed by Andreossi (cliché credit printed on the image), this halftone-printed postcard captures Geneva's Place de Neuve at the height of the Belle Époque, when the newly inaugurated Grand Théâtre (opened 1879) and the older Musée Rath (1826, Switzerland's first purpose-built public museum) defined the city's cultural ambitions. The card was published and sold through "A la Dégringolade, Grand Bazur, Genève" — a Geneva novelty and stationery retailer whose name ("the tumble" or "the slide") gave it a memorably eccentric identity in the city's retail landscape. The back bears the early "Ce côté est exclusivement réservé à l'adresse" single-side-only format, confirming a pre-1904 issue date. A rare retailer-imprint card with documented photographer credit, in fine unused condition, and with a delightful detail-rich street scene visible in the close-up third image.
