Postcard 1905 Used Lambeth Palace London Night Art Card East Dulwich

London (Lambeth), England, UK1905Pre-linenGood

Gas lamps glimmer like scattered stars along the Thames embankment as Lambeth Palace looms massively against a theatrical twilight sky — this evocative nocturnal art card transforms one of London's most venerable landmarks into something almost cinematic, its red-brick Tudor gatehouse and adjacent church tower rendered in deep, atmospheric tones by an artist working in the tradition of tonal Impressionist illustration. The card was sent in June 1905, postmarked East Dulwich, and the writer — signing simply as "M" — fills every inch of the back in a looping, expressive hand, telling a friend about a jolly Saturday outing to see someone they both know: "Met Mr. W., who actually sat down and spoke to us for an hour or two & came home by train with us. I was more than surprised to see your friend there, Miss A — she seemed pleased to see me." A dance followed that night, and there's a wistful note about a proposed Brighton trip: "She wants one of us to go to Brighton now — don't see how we can." The recipient, addressed at "Ellesmere," 60 Fillebrook Road, Leytonstone, Essex, is identified as Miss G. A perfectly preserved social snapshot of Edwardian London life.
