Postcard c1903 UDB Chester Cathedral England Hildesheimer Art Card

Chester, England, UK1903Pre-linenExcellent

Two figures — a gentleman in a top hat and a white-surpliced clergyman — pause in quiet conversation beneath a young tree on the cathedral green at Chester, while the soaring Gothic tower of Chester Cathedral rises behind them in warm sandstone gold, its pinnacles and tracery rendered with the delicate precision of a skilled watercolourist working at the height of the Edwardian postcard golden age. Chester Cathedral, built on the site of a Benedictine abbey founded in 1092, dominates the ancient walled city and is one of England's most photographed ecclesiastical buildings — yet here, rendered as tinted artwork rather than photograph, it acquires a timeless, almost dreamlike quality. The card is an undivided back example by S. Hildesheimer & Co., Ltd. of London and Manchester (Series No. 5293), printed at their own works — an early pre-division card placing it circa 1902–1904. Unused and in outstanding condition, it is a fine example of Edwardian British ecclesiastical topography, appealing to Chester local historians, cathedral collectors, and early-era postcard enthusiasts alike.
