Brooding and magnificent against a bare-branched winter sky, the Fantoft Stave Church rises in layered dragon-headed splendor in this striking real-photo postcard — one of the great architectural survivors of medieval Scandinavia, here captured in the dramatic high-contrast silver-gelatin printing that gives RPPC cards their distinctive documentary gravitas. Originally built around 1150 AD in Fortun, Sogn, the church was dismantled and moved to its Fantoft hillside site near Bergen in 1883, where it became one of Norway's most visited cultural monuments. The tiered roofline, carved dragon prow finials, and surrounding stave construction are shown with exceptional clarity against snow-dusted ground — this winter photograph emphasizing the building's primordial, almost otherworldly silhouette. Tragically, the church was destroyed by arson in June 1992 and subsequently rebuilt; this card therefore depicts the original pre-1992 structure in its authentic historic state.
