Antique & Vintage Postcards

Sunlight catches the ornate Gothic spire of the Berner Münster soaring above the Kesslergasse as vintage 1960s automobiles — Volkswagen Beetles, a Citroën 2CV — line the cobbled arcade street below, a perfect time-capsule of Bern at its most elegant. This chrome card, postmarked 5 June 1963 from Bern's Rathaus postal station, was sent airmail by a traveler named Erna to her friend Jean in New York City, describing a smooth flight into Zurich, a drive to Berne, and a beloved room with a balcony overlooking the river and old town at the Bellevue Palace Hotel — one of Switzerland's grandest hotels, still operating today. Erna's breezy note — "getting used to being well taken care of" — perfectly captures the golden age of transatlantic leisure travel. The Berner Münster, begun in 1421, remains Switzerland's tallest cathedral at 100.6 meters; the Kesslergasse view here was one of the most-reproduced postcard compositions of mid-century Bern.
