Antique & Vintage Postcards

Perched at the top of the Spanish Steps, the legendary Hotel Hassler "Villa Medici" presides over the Trinità dei Monti church and its twin-towered campanile in this luminous watercolor-style chrome card — the Egyptian obelisk of the Piazza Trinità dei Monti just visible at left, period automobiles (a green early-1950s sedan prominent in the foreground) lending an unmistakable postwar glamour to the scene. The Hassler, founded in 1893 and rebuilt after WWII, was already by the early 1950s the preferred Roman address of film stars, diplomats, and international society. The card is stamped and postmarked, sent by a traveler named Nellie to her friend Frances, describing dinner on the Hassler's famous rooftop terrace "overlooking this beautiful city," a stop in Geneva for the "Big Four Conference" (almost certainly the 1955 Geneva Summit of Eisenhower, Eden, Faure, and Khrushchev), and onward travel through Vienna, Milan, Germany, Stockholm, Oslo, and Amsterdam — a remarkable Cold War-era itinerary recorded in warm, intimate cursive.
