Postcard 1960s Pisa Italy Chrome Leaning Tower Cathedral Sunset Miss Mary

Pisa, Italy1965ChromeFair-Good

Against a dramatically hand-tinted or early-chrome sunset sky of burning orange and purple cloud — the kind of theatrical sky that made Italian postcards of the 1950s–60s irresistible to tourists — the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa looms over the Apse of the Duomo in this evocative dusk view from the Campo dei Miracoli. The Tower's white marble arcading catches the last warm light while deep shadows pool in the cathedral's ornate Pisan Romanesque blind arcades below, and rows of cypress and umbrella pine frame the ancient complex against what appears to be a hand-colored or early chrome sky enhancement typical of Orniafoto Torino productions. The message is charmingly minimal: Miss Mary sent this to Miss Elsie in Harvey, Illinois, with nothing more than "Greetings from Pisa" — a perfect snapshot of mid-century tourist brevity. A single 15-lire violet Italian Republic stamp (Michelangelo series) frankly cancels the card, postmarked from Pisa in what appears to be the mid-1960s based on stamp type and card stock.
