Postcard Milan Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Interior Italy Chrome c1905

Milan, Italy1905Pre-linenGood

Stepping beneath the magnificent iron-and-glass dome of Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, this richly hand-tinted early chrome-era card captures the grandeur of what Milanese locals affectionately call "il Salotto di Milano" — the city's drawing room. Elegantly dressed pedestrians mill about the marble-paved octagon beneath soaring arched vaults adorned with gilded mosaics representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and America; a shop bearing the sign "TAPPET" anchors the left arcade. Opened in 1877 after architect Giuseppe Mengoni famously fell from the scaffolding days before its inauguration, the Galleria remains one of the world's oldest and most beautiful shopping malls. On the back, a tender note from Judy to Cassie shares that her family has a cherished memory here — a photograph of all four girls beneath a Christmas tree — adding a warm personal layer to this already evocative souvenir. The stamp, a German "Flockenblume" (Cornflower) definitive at 95 Pfennig, suggests the card was mailed from Germany to the United States in the early 2000s, a modern dispatch carrying an antique image across time.
