Antique & Vintage Postcards

Frozen in volcanic time, this haunting black-and-white view of Pompeii's Forum — "Il Foro" — peers across a field of broken columns toward the brooding silhouette of Vesuvius rising in the background, exactly as it loomed on that fateful day in 79 AD. The image was reproduced by a personal artist for Geo P. Way of Detroit, Michigan, who visited Pompeii in June while touring Europe and was so moved that he had postcards made to share the experience. The reverse carries a remarkably personal and historically literate narrative: Way describes the 63 BC earthquake, the 79 AD eruption, the ongoing excavations he witnessed, and his philosophical reflection on viewing "the skeleton-like form city of the old life" against the backdrop of modern America. The card identifies the scene as the Court House and Court Yard where elections were held — an educated layman's gloss on the Basilica and Forum space. This is a rare privately produced souvenir card with substantial manuscript-like printed text, occupying a fascinating niche between travel memoir and postcard.
