With a crown of gilded feathers and one leg sporting a jaunty boot, "Jurkibus Rex" — self-proclaimed King of Fowl — struts across this wonderfully absurdist 1910 Thanksgiving humor card, its ruby-red verse challenging the eagle's royal claim with cheerful seasonal irreverence. Published by F.A. Moss of Denver, Colorado and postmarked November 1910, the card was sent to a Mrs. at the Spanish Ranch in Plumas County, California — a remote mountain ranching community in the northern Sierra Nevada — with a breezy holiday message wishing everyone "a good day" and noting there's "lots to be thankful for." The rhyme reads: "The Eagle is the King of fowl, they say, / But this, I think is just a bit absurd; / For long about Thanksgiving time, you'll find / The Turkey is by far the noblest bird." The card carries a copyright 1909 by F.A. Moss, Denver, Colo., making it a scarce regional publisher imprint. Series number 1796.
