Postcard 1902 Valentine Dutch Girl Raphael Tuck Chalkboard Curtis Art Unused

1902Pre-linenExcellent

A rosy-cheeked Dutch girl in wooden klompen, white cap, and embroidered vest stands arms clasped against a dramatic chalkboard-black ground, her cheerful broken-English declaration — "it iss you lof me Ya!" — scrawled in white chalk script beside her in this utterly charming 1902 Valentine card from the storied house of Raphael Tuck & Sons. Illustrated by the artist Curtis, whose signature appears at lower left, the design belongs to Tuck's celebrated novelty Valentine series in which immigrant and folk-costume figures deliver their affectionate messages in phonetic dialect — a format hugely popular in the Edwardian era. Published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Co. Ltd., New York, under their 1902 copyright, the card retains its bright chromolithographic colors and embossed wood-grain frame detail. The reverse is entirely blank — never mailed, never addressed — leaving this little Dutch charmer in exceptionally fresh condition after more than 120 years.
