Postcard 1907 Roller Skating Craze Comic Earl Art Mailed Olympia WA 1¢ Franklin

Olympia, Washington, USA1907Pre-linenGood

Two roller skaters collide nose-to-nose in a startled, accidental kiss beneath a rink notice reading "PEASE TRY AND AVOID COLLISIONS" — the misspelling only adding to the charm of this witty Edwardian comic card titled Roller Skating Craze, captioned "Accidents Will Happen, Even With Experts." Drawn by the illustrator signing as Earl, the red-on-cream line art captures the skating mania that swept Britain and America around 1906–1910, when indoor roller rinks became fashionable social venues and, inevitably, spaces for flirtation. This card was actually mailed — sent by someone identifying themselves only as "D. L. W." to a Miss Hatty in Olympia, Washington, postmarked October 11, 1907 (Olympia, WA). The 1¢ green Franklin stamp (Scott #300) is present and cancelled. A delightfully period artifact of both the skating craze and Edwardian postal culture.
