Money raining from an open window — paper bills and gold coins tumbling freely past clover vines heavy with red blossoms — makes this 1916 New Year postcard a vivid expression of the era's unabashed wish for prosperity. The embossed, high-relief chromolithograph, printed in Saxony (then Germany's finest postcard-producing region), glows with rich greens, golds, and cream tones. The lucky four-leaf clover motif frames an open casement window with a potted clover plant on the sill — a layered good-luck charm for the recipient. Postmarked from Phoebus, Virginia on January 8, 1916 — a small independent city near Hampton that would be annexed in 1952 — the card was mailed to Miss Margaret in Baltimore, Maryland, carrying a 1¢ Washington stamp.
