Antique & Vintage Postcards

Two tiny figures trudge through a hushed blue-white snowscape toward a warmly glowing yellow cottage, a great golden moon hanging low over the horizon in a wash of mauve and rose — this embossed New Year postcard from around 1910 captures the romantic melancholy of a winter evening with surprising painterly depth for a mass-produced card. The beveled white embossed border frames the scene like a frosted windowpane, and bold Art Nouveau lettering proclaims "With Best New Year Wishes" in red and navy. The card was mailed by "Mother" from Chevy Chase — the prestigious Maryland enclave developed as one of America's first planned streetcar suburbs — to Miss Ernestine in Poolesville, Maryland, a rural Montgomery County community, carrying a 1¢ Washington stamp postmarked late December.
