Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bold crimson poinsettias — two large blooms flanking a warm holiday message in Arts-and-Crafts lettering — give this early twentieth-century New Year card an almost modernist graphic appeal that stands apart from the fussier embossed cards of its era. "Here's to a Happy New Year — a year wise in its plans and prolific in good results" reads as almost corporate in its optimism, a sentiment perfectly in tune with the Progressive Era's confidence in self-improvement and forward thinking. Published by the prestigious Gibson Art Company of Cincinnati, a major American greeting card house, the card was mailed to Miss Alice in Poolesville, Maryland, with a crowded handwritten message on the correspondence side. A 1¢ Washington stamp and a December postmark complete the package, linking this card to the holiday season of approximately 1912–1914.
