Postcard 1900 Paris Place Vendôme Column Hôtel Bristol Undivided Back

Paris, France1900Pre-linenExcellent

Standing sentinel over one of Paris's most elegant squares, the Vendôme Column rises dramatically in this luminous circa-1900 photographic view — horse-drawn carriages drift across the cobblestones while fashionably dressed Parisians stroll beneath the mansard rooflines of the Hôtel du Rhin and the Hôtel Bristol, two grand addresses that once sheltered European royalty and Gilded Age Americans making the Grand Tour. The column, cast from 1,200 Austrian cannons captured at Austerlitz and crowned by a figure of Napoleon, anchors the octagonal Place Vendôme in a scene that feels suspended between the Second Empire and the Belle Époque — gaslit lampposts still flicker, a coachman waits, and the square's uniform stone façades gleam with the quiet confidence of imperial ambition. The card's back carries the undivided-back format with the classic French legend Ce côté est exclusivement réservé à l'adresse, firmly dating it to before the 1904 regulatory change that permitted a divided back; the image is rendered in a fine collotype or early halftone photomechanical process on cream stock, uncirculated and never addressed.
