Pennsylvania Station New York City Linen Postcard 1930s Curt Teich NYC

New York City, USA1937LinenGood

Grand colonnades stretch the full length of a city block in this sweeping linen view of old Pennsylvania Station — a Beaux-Arts titan that New Yorkers would mourn bitterly when the wrecking ball claimed it in 1963, an act of demolition that directly sparked the U.S. historic preservation movement. Printed in the rich warm tones of Curt Teich's "C.T. Art-Colortone" process, the card shows the station's monumental Doric columns and arched train shed windows against a cloud-streaked sky, with period automobiles — boxy sedans of the late 1930s — gliding past on Seventh Avenue. The back text, published by Frank E. Cooper of 258 Broadway, New York, describes the station as "America's Transcontinental Gateway," opened in 1910 as the largest structure of its kind in the world, handling over sixty million passengers annually and covering eight acres of ground. Stock number 3A-H1286 suggests a circa 1930s printing. This card is a poignant document of lost architectural grandeur.
