Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bathed in warm amber light against a deep cobalt sky, the soaring 70-story RCA Building — today known as 30 Rockefeller Plaza — commands the Manhattan skyline in this striking nighttime linen card, photographed by the celebrated architectural photographer Samuel Gottscho, whose name appears in the lower right corner. Gottscho's mastery of nocturnal urban scenes made him the go-to lens for New York's great Art Deco landmarks, and this image is a prime example: the setback silhouette of the tower glows with almost cinematic drama, the surrounding mid-city blocks reduced to dark foils. Published by Frank E. Cooper and printed by Curt Teich's Art-Colortone process, card no. 68 / 5A-H381 places production in the mid-1930s to early 1940s, shortly after Rockefeller Center's completion. The back text proudly notes the building rises to 850 feet and is, "in point of gross floor area, the largest office building in the world." A collector-grade piece where architectural history, Art Deco design, and a named photographer converge.
