Times Square Paramount Building New York City Linen Postcard 1930s Teich

New York City, USA1933LinenGood

Broadway blazes in afternoon light as the Paramount Building's distinctive globe-crowned clock tower and the New York Times tower anchor a Times Square teeming with period street cars, automobiles, and pedestrians — a living snapshot of New York's theatrical heartbeat in the late 1930s. The Curt Teich Art-Colortone palette renders the scene in warm amber and terracotta against a hazy blue sky, capturing the density and kinetic energy of what the card's reverse calls "the heart of New York's theatrical district." Published by Frank E. Cooper and numbered 36, stock code 3A-H99 places this among the earliest Frank E. Cooper / Curt Teich collaborations. The Hotel Astor's copper mansard roof peeks in at lower right; a Camel cigarettes billboard is just visible mid-scene. The back notes that "within the radius of 10 blocks are scores of theatres" — a detail that evokes the golden era of Broadway when Times Square was still glamorous rather than neon-gritty. Card no. 36 / 3A-H99.
