Chrysler Building New York City Linen Postcard 1930s Art Deco Curt Teich

New York City, USA1931LinenGood

The Chrysler Building's legendary Nirosta steel crown catches the light in this luminous linen view, its eagle gargoyles and sunburst arches unmistakable against a gradient sky fading from deep blue at the zenith to warm gold at the horizon — a composition that feels almost reverential, as though the artist understood they were depicting one of the twentieth century's great architectural achievements. Completed in 1930 and briefly the world's tallest building before the Empire State surpassed it eleven months later, the Chrysler Building has never lost its place as New York's most beloved skyscraper. Published by Frank E. Cooper and printed by Curt Teich's Art-Colortone process, card no. 39 / 3A-H93 places this in the early 1930s, when the building was brand new and still a source of national wonder. The reverse text notes the spire reaches "77 stories — 1,046 feet, 4¾ inches" and that the observatory on the 71st floor commands views of 1,600 square miles — facts delivered with the breathless pride of a young skyscraper age.
