Postcard Hong Kong Pavilion NY World's Fair 1964-65 Chrome Official Unused

Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York City, New York, USA1964ChromeGood

Red-sailed Chinese junks drift through a shimmering lagoon before a pavilion of sweeping green pagoda roofs and lacquered lattice screens in this official architectural rendering postcard for the Hong Kong Pavilion at the New York World's Fair of 1964–65 — a fantasy of East-meets-West that promised visitors "the exotic flavor of the British Crown Colony" through oriental food, entertainment, and native industry, all designed by architect Eldridge Snyder in a dazzling blend of modern structure and traditional Chinese form. The 1964–65 World's Fair, held in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens, welcomed over 51 million visitors across its two seasons and was a high-water mark of mid-century American optimism, its theme "Peace through Understanding" a hopeful counterpoint to Cold War anxieties; the Hong Kong Pavilion was among its most visually arresting international exhibits, its junk-shaped entrance structures and pagoda silhouettes impossible to mistake for anything else on the fairgrounds. Architect Eldridge Snyder's name is printed directly on the front of the card — a rare instance of an architect receiving postcard credit — and the Unisphere logo on the reverse, licensed by the U.S. Steel corporation, certifies this as an official fair souvenir published by Dexter of West Nyack, New York. Hong Kong was still a British Crown Colony in 1964, lending the pavilion a particular historical poignancy today.
