Postcard Chrome Cape Cod MA Lobster Steamers Corn Beach Clambake 1970s

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA1975ChromeExcellent

Two brilliant scarlet lobsters sprawl claw-to-claw on damp Cape Cod sand, flanked by a pile of steamed littleneck clams still in their shells and fresh-shucked ears of corn — a feast that the card's caption cheekily calls "Pilgrim's regular fare," invoking centuries of New England coastal tradition in a single sun-drenched image. Photographer John J. Beyer of West Chatham, Massachusetts shot this mouth-watering tableau for his own self-published postcard line, capturing the quintessential summer clambake that drew millions of tourists to the Cape every season. Cards like this one, simple food-subject chromes aimed squarely at the visitor market, were staples of gift shops from Provincetown to Woods Hole through the 1970s and 1980s. The vivid color printing makes the lobster shells almost tactile — a delicious souvenir of salt air and long summer afternoons.
