Postcard Deerfield Inn Massachusetts Chrome Unused Samuel Chamberlain 1960s

Deerfield, Massachusetts, USA1965ChromeExcellent

Golden afternoon light rakes across the double-tiered columned porch of the Deerfield Inn in this elegantly composed chrome-era photograph — a study in Federal-period architecture bathed in the long shadows of a late-autumn New England day, the bare-branched trees and copper-toned shrubs lending the scene a spare, almost melancholy beauty. The inn's stately white columns, fanlight windows, and period lantern evoke the dignified restraint of early American design, making this postcard as much an architectural portrait as a travel souvenir. The photograph was taken by Samuel Chamberlain, one of the most celebrated architectural photographers of 20th-century New England, whose work documented historic American buildings with a printmaker's eye for tone and form. Published by Walter H. Miller of Williamsburg, Virginia (catalog no. 51713), the card was distributed as part of Deerfield's active historic tourism program. Deerfield Inn, situated on the village's famous "The Street," has welcomed guests since 1884 and remains one of the most historically significant country inns in America. This card is unused and in excellent condition.
