Postcard Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC Linen 1930s Curt Teich 5th Ave

New York City, USA1936LinenGood

Sunlight bathes the grand Beaux-Arts façade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in warm ivory tones in this handsome linen-era view — slender young trees line the Fifth Avenue sidewalk, a lone automobile idles at the curb, and the museum's colossal Corinthian columns stand sentinel over one of the world's greatest art collections. Published in the early 1930s by Frank E. Cooper of 258 Broadway, New York, and printed by the celebrated Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago using their patented "C.T. Art-Colortone" process, the card captures the Met at a moment when the building's 1902 Richard Morris Hunt wing was still relatively new to New Yorkers. The institution's description on the reverse proudly lists "priceless collections of paintings, statuary, tapestries, armor, jewels and furniture," the language of an era when the museum competed fiercely for civic pride and tourist dollars.
