Antique & Vintage Postcards

From the windswept bluffs at the very tip of Long Island, the Montauk Point Lighthouse — America's oldest lighthouse in New York State, first lit in 1796 — rises pale and solitary above a steel-grey sea in this gently hand-tinted Edwardian-era view. Mailed from Providence, Rhode Island on August 4, 1910, the card carries a brief, somewhat difficult-to-read message and was addressed to a recipient named something like "Mrs. Nellie P." at Porter Street in Worcester, Massachusetts — a tiny slice of an ordinary summer's correspondence now preserved across more than a century. Published by the Metropolitan News Co. of Boston, Mass. and Germany (a hallmark of the golden age of German-printed American view cards), the image has the soft, painterly quality of the finest pre-linen printing. The postmark's clear "PROVIDENCE R.I. AUG 4 9-AM 1910" machine cancel anchors this card precisely in the final years of the Undivided Back era's cultural moment.
