Cleveland Municipal Airport Busy Day Linen Postcard 1930s Ohio Curt Teich

Cleveland, Ohio, USA1934LinenExcellent

Dozens of propeller aircraft crowd the tarmac of Cleveland Municipal Airport in this stunning aerial-view linen postcard, their silver wings glinting against the warm earth tones of one of America's most ambitious Depression-era infrastructure projects — the airport that briefly claimed the title of busiest in the world during the 1930s. Opened in 1925 on the southwestern lakefront along Rocky River Drive, Cleveland Municipal (now Cleveland Hopkins International) pioneered commercial aviation milestones including the first commercial flight to use an instrument landing system; this colorized linen bird's-eye view, numbered 54 and copyrighted by Barnhill & Butler, captures the terminal complex, multiple hangar buildings in red-orange, and what appear to be early airliners alongside smaller biplanes, all set against Lake Erie's shoreline and a distant city skyline. The vivid C.T. ArtColortone lithography by Curt Teich & Co. of Chicago renders the scene with the optimistic, almost dreamlike palette that defines the linen era. Published by American Greeting Publishers of Cleveland, this card was never mailed.
