Indiana State Prison Main Entrance Michigan City IN Linen Postcard 1930s

Michigan City, Indiana, USA1933LinenExcellent

Stately trees frame the whitewashed limestone walls of the Indiana State Prison's main entrance in this colorized linen postcard from Michigan City — a facility famous (or infamous) as the 1934 escape site of John Dillinger, making it one of the most storied correctional institutions in American criminal history and a surprisingly popular tourist-postcard subject of the era. Period automobiles — sedans and coupes of late-1920s to early-1930s vintage — line the drive in front of the crenellated gatehouse, their presence suggesting this view was captured during visiting hours or an administrative event. The warm sunset palette of orange and peach sky above the red-brick and limestone complex gives the scene an almost pastoral quality that belies the institution's grim purpose. Published by E.C. Kropp Co. of Milwaukee and numbered 7619, this card was never mailed, leaving the reverse completely blank and the face in excellent condition with vivid color retention.
