Luzern Kapellbrücke Interior Switzerland Postcard c1900 UDB Pre-Linen

Lucerne, Switzerland1902Pre-linenGood

Two women in long skirts and a gentleman in a dark suit stroll the shadowed wooden corridor of Lucerne's Kapellbrücke — the Chapel Bridge — in this atmospheric black-and-white postcard that predates the devastating 1993 fire that would destroy much of this medieval structure. Dating to 1333, the Kapellbrücke is the oldest surviving wooden covered bridge in Europe, its interior roof panels once adorned with 17th-century triangular paintings depicting scenes from Swiss and Lucerne history; one of those painted panels, showing a skull and crossbones, is just barely visible in the upper rafters of the front image. Published by Verlag Gebrüder Wehrli of Kilchberg-Zürich and printed by the Kunstanstalt Louis Glaser of Leipzig — a hallmark pairing of the finest Swiss and German postcard production houses of the era — this undivided-back card dates to approximately 1900–1905, before the 1907 regulation requiring divided backs. The Swiss multilingual UPU back, printed in French, German, and Italian, is a textbook example of fin-de-siècle Swiss postal practice. A second, slightly later photographic print of the same interior view is included as an additional reference image.
