Antique & Vintage Postcards

Five members of an American family — a teenage girl, a mother, a father, and two young towheaded boys — sit together on the sand against a wooden boardwalk railing, squinting into the summer sun in this warm, candid real-photo postcard from around 1918–1925. All five wear the dark knit tank-style bathing costumes of the era, the children in miniature versions of the adult suit, one of the boys apparently whittling or playing with a stick in the sand. The father, broad-shouldered and square-jawed, sits at right; the mother in the center cradles the smaller boy between her knees with an ease that speaks of a comfortable, affectionate family. The teenage girl at left smiles gently toward the camera. The rough-sawn boardwalk planking behind them and the fine-grained beach sand suggest an Atlantic coast location — perhaps the Jersey Shore, Long Island, or a New England beach. A completely ordinary moment, made extraordinary by time.
