Antique & Vintage Postcards

Waves crash through the dramatic natural sea arch at Onomea, north of Hilo on Hawaiʻi's Big Island, in this exceptional pair of real-photo postcard views — one taken from a distance showing the full arch framed by tropical foliage and a pandanus tree, the other captured from water level looking directly through the tunnel of volcanic rock as surf surges into the enclosed cove. Onomea Arch was one of the most photographed geological features in territorial Hawaiʻi, a stunning lava formation that drew visitors along the Old Mamalahoa Highway; the arch tragically collapsed into the sea during a 1956 tsunami. These images therefore preserve a landmark that no longer exists, making them historically poignant documents. The caption printed in the image reads "ONOMEA ARCH / NORTH HILO, HAWAII." The back shows a standard embossed "POST CARD / CORRESPONDENCE / ADDRESS / PLACE STAMP HERE" format with decorative border lettering consistent with ca. 1907–1915 RPPC stock.
