Antique & Vintage Postcards

Glittering garlands of red-and-gold tinsel swirl up the steeple of St. Paul's Chapel and cascade in festive waves across the façade of a towering neighbor — a dazzling holiday treatment applied by hand to this pre-linen Souvenir Post Card Co. view of lower Manhattan, postmarked June 19, 1907. The teal-tinted photograph captures the Georgian chapel (built 1764, oldest surviving church building in New York City) dwarfed by what appears to be the American Surety Building rising behind it, offering a remarkable document of the rapidly transforming Broadway skyline at the dawn of the skyscraper era. On the picture side, in a looping hand, a sender asks "Hello Pearl, are you going up to Langford Wednesday? Let me know by the mail to morrow if I am going to go with you" — a slice of small-town social planning fired off in haste and mailed R.F.D. to Pearl in Jerusalem, N.Y.
