On August 14, 1960, a traveler named Grace — perhaps giddy at the coincidence of sharing a name with the principality's own beloved princess — scrawled on the back of this vivid chrome view of Monaco's Prince's Palace: "This is where Princess Grace lives. This is a beautiful resort." The front image, published by Real-Photo/Cie des Arts, captures the palace's salmon-pink State Apartments and imposing medieval tower from the Place du Palais, a horse-drawn carriage and vintage automobiles lending authentic early-1960s atmosphere, while a lone pedestrian strolls the sun-drenched square past the Louis II statue. The card crossed the Atlantic to Fred and Mildred in New York, bearing a single Rainier III 0.30F stamp and a Monte Carlo machine cancel promoting the Casino's 50th anniversary — a charming slice of jet-age tourism at its most personal.
