Postcard 1907 Era Midnight Sun Hammerfest Norway Scenic UDB Undivided Back

Hammerfest, Norway1907Pre-linenFair-Good

At the very top of the world — Hammerfest, then proudly billed as the northernmost city in Europe — the midnight sun bleeds gold across an Arctic fjord in this hauntingly beautiful early color-lithograph card, printed when such chromolithographic scenes were the cutting edge of travel imagery and the Grand Tour of Norway was the aspiration of every adventurous Edwardian. The back text, written in the breathless promotional style of the era, tells the story perfectly: the voyage to the North Cape took eight days round-trip by steamer, and standing on deck at midnight watching the sun refuse to set was described as "a never-to-be-forgotten moment." The phenomenon, the text notes, was visible from May 11th to July 30th — details that suggest this card was produced for the tourist steamer trade, likely sold aboard ship or at port-of-call souvenir stands. The stamp box specifies domestic one cent / foreign two cents, firmly dating this to the pre-1907 undivided-back era or the transitional 1907–1910 period. Card No. 134. Unposted, with a penciled price notation "10D" in the stamp box corner.
