Antique & Vintage Postcards

Four Masai giraffes rest languidly in the dappled shade of an acacia woodland — legs folded beneath their improbably long bodies, necks swaying at different angles like a living mobile — in this vivid chrome-era color card from Sapra Studio of Nairobi, Kenya, one of East Africa's most prolific mid-century wildlife postcard producers whose images captured the golden age of safari tourism just as Kenya was moving through independence toward nationhood. The composition is wonderfully naturalistic: the giraffes are not posed against a flat horizon but nestled into a dense, dark-canopied thicket, their reticulated coats glowing amber against the deep greens of the bush in a way that suggests the photographer had genuine patience and skill. Published as No. 57 in the African Wild Life — Giraffe series, this card is unused and in excellent clean condition, a sharp survivor from the era when East African wildlife cards were sold by the thousands at Nairobi's New Stanley Hotel gift shop and at Treetops.
